Float Rating

By Matt | May 7, 2009

Well, instead of taking time off from flying I decided what the heck… I’m going to get my float endorsement! I’m not the type of guy that can just sit around and do nothing, I always looking to learn.

Float flying is the best type of flying I have done to date in my aviation training. I decided to with Lake Country Airways for my training because they had their planes in the water and were available right away to go flying. They operate a 172 and 185 on floats and have a few instructors. The owner of the company Jeff, is a very nice individual and very experienced at float flying. So far I have logged 3.1 hrs and have almost covered all the bare essentials of float flying. Nothing beats landing on a remote lake and docking and just knowing that nothing but mother nature surrounds you. At one point my instructor told me “Ok pretend I’m a paying passenger, take me to this little lake and dock the plane and drop me off”. We took found the little lake landed and did exactly what he said. It felt so cool thinking that one day I might just be doing this for a living.

I have more float flying scheduled for this week and next week. Hope the weather meteorologist are wrong with their for cast for the next few days predicting rain every day :(
